ICSI Treatment – Advanced Fertility Care for Male Infertility

What is ICSI?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a highly advanced assisted reproductive technology (ART) used as part of IVF treatment. It is specifically designed for couples facing severe male infertility or when previous IVF attempts have failed.

In ICSI, a single healthy sperm is carefully selected and injected directly into the cytoplasm of a mature egg using a specialized microscope and micromanipulation tools. This direct approach eliminates barriers that normally prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg, greatly improving the chances of successful fertilization.

ICSI has transformed the possibilities for parenthood, especially in cases where sperm count, motility, or morphology are significant challenges.

ICSI Procedure – Step by Step

The ICSI process follows similar steps to IVF, with the addition of sperm injection:

  1. Ovarian Stimulation

    • The woman is given hormonal medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.

  2. Egg Retrieval

    • Eggs are collected from the ovaries using a minor surgical procedure under ultrasound guidance.

  3. Sperm Collection & Selection

    • A semen sample is collected, or sperm is surgically retrieved (TESA/PESA).

    • The embryologist selects the healthiest sperm using advanced techniques.

  4. Microinjection (ICSI)

    • A single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of each mature egg using a fine glass needle.

  5. Embryo Culture

    • Fertilized eggs are monitored for 3–5 days to check growth and quality.

  6. Embryo Transfer

    • One or more healthy embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus.

  7. Pregnancy Test

    • After 12–14 days, a blood test confirms whether implantation and pregnancy have occurred.

When is ICSI Recommended?

ICSI is often recommended in the following situations:

  • Severe male infertility

    • Low sperm count (oligospermia)

    • Poor sperm motility (asthenozoospermia)

    • Abnormal sperm shape (teratozoospermia)

  • Obstructive or non-obstructive azoospermia

    • When sperm cannot be found in semen but can be retrieved surgically from the testes or epididymis.

  • Presence of antisperm antibodies that hinder natural fertilization.

  • Failed or poor fertilization in previous IVF cycles.

  • Fertilization with frozen eggs that may have a hardened outer shell.

  • Unexplained infertility where conventional IVF does not succeed.

Success Rates and Benefits of ICSI

ICSI has become one of the most successful fertility treatments for male infertility.

Benefits include:

  • High fertilization rates per egg.

  • Effective even when sperm count is extremely low.

  • Overcomes natural barriers preventing fertilization.

  • Suitable when sperm must be retrieved surgically.

  • Increased chances of success after failed IVF attempts.

Average Success Rate:

  • Fertilization success: 70–80% of eggs injected.

  • Pregnancy success: 45–60% per cycle (depends on woman’s age, egg quality, and embryo health).

Risks & Considerations

While ICSI is generally safe, some points to consider:
  • Slightly higher risk of embryo abnormalities (though still rare).

  • Possible multiple pregnancies if multiple embryos are transferred.

  • Emotional and financial stress during treatment.

Our fertility experts ensure detailed counseling and safe protocols to minimize risks.
